Current Status and Outlook of Flue-cured Tobacco Variety Development in Guizhou

Variety development is basic for tobacco production. Guizhou is the second largest flue-cured tobacco producing province in China, where 21 varieties have been selected and approved by the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration. In this paper, three development stages of flue-cured tobacco varieties in Guizhou were described, and the existing problems were analyzed. To address these problems, aiming for the promotion of Guizhou and the whole country’s leaf tobacco production, several development direction and countermeasures were put forward, adhering to ecological priority and breeding variety suitable for different ecological regions, innovation-driven development and breeding breakthrough new variety, the integration of agricultural machinery and agricultural technology to select suitable varieties, the consideration of common needs of agriculture and industry with high quality and proper yield, and adhering to the implementation of customized production with improved varieties and cultivation techniques.
